Description
Four plates to be used for planning in the Redlands Area, Mesa County: 1) geology, 2) geologic hazards, 3) mineral resources, and 4) relative permeability. The Redlands area is located along the northeast flank of the Uncompahgre Arch. This anticline has a long axis that trends or plunges northwest. There are also smaller more localized features, including a monoclinal fold and the Redlands and Kodels Canyon faults. These result in sedimentary rocks with dip ranges from 3 to 10 or 80 degrees or that are broken. Although large scale movement of the faults is not deemed likely, there may still be small displacements, such as the shallow earthquake that occurred in 1974-75. Jointing in the massive sandstone beds of the Dakota and Burro Canyon formations may form large rockfalls when the underlying softer shales and siltstones are eroded. Consideration of the structure of the sedimentary rocks in the Redlands is important when mapping the rockfall, landslide, and earthquake (seismic) hazards of the area.
