The north face of Mount Lincoln (14,286 ft) rises over 3,000 ft above the Middle Fork of the South Platte. It is the highest summit of the Mosquito Range, and the eleventh-highest summit in the contiguous United States. Old mine roads zigzag across a nearby slope at the top of Park County. The Crestone Peak Group, in the Sangre de Christo Range, consists of four peaks that exceed 14,000 ft in elevation. From left to right these are: Challenger Point, Kit Carson Peak, Crestone Peak, and Crestone Needle. Photo credit: John Hopkins for the CGS.
Overlook of the confluence of the Dolores and San Miguel rivers in Montrose County. Reddish-orange cliffs of the early
Jurassic Wingate Sandstone form the tall cliffs above the river level. Abundant rockfall debris with
many house-sized boulders is common along the Dolores River. The darker red slope-forming rocks above the massive eolian Wingate cliffs is the Jurassic Kayenta
Formation. The overlying Jurassic Entrada, Summerville, and Morrison formations are seen in
ascending order in the background, highlighted by the setting sun. Photo credit: Nate Rogers for the CGS.
