Cumbres and Toltec Geology Train

2023-08-09 | CGS Admin

This year’s September 10th Geology Train — a very special and popular opportunity to enjoy some spectacular geology and scenery in southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico — isn’t quite sold out!

Our very own Peter Barkmann, senior hydrogeologist (emeritus) and Amy Crandall, engineering geologist, will be on board as geo-docents helping lead an informative and inspiring day in the high country.

The train will depart from Antonito, Colorado to traverse spectacular geology along the 64 miles of Cumbres & Toltec line to Chama, New Mexico (or vice-versa). The route features incredible overviews of the Rio Grande Rift, Brazos Uplift, Tusas Mountains and their Precambrian core, the San Luis Basin and San Juan Sag, eruptive evidence of the San Juan Volcanic field, recent glacial deposits, and snapshots of the Jurassic. More than just views, this special train will stop at numerous outcrops and rail cuts along the right of way, to mingle, marvel and collect photographs, samples, and experiences only accessible along the train line.

To accompany the trip, a field-trip guide written especially for the geology train is included in the ticket price.

ALL ABOARD!
