The Colorado Piedmont is located in the valley of the South Platte River, just north of Denver, and was formed about 28 million years ago. During this time, an uplift of the American Plate increased the elevation by about 1500 meters (5000 feet) and the South Platte River rerouted northwest along the mountains to join the Cache la Poudre River.
