Unfolding the Geology of the West

2022-04-21 | CGS Admin

Our collaborators and friends up in Boulder at the Geological Society of America (GSA) are making the following special offer available to our loyal subscribers (instructions at the end of the article):

As the national GSA conference takes place in Denver every few years, staff at the CGS are frequently involved in organizing and leading field trips in the region, and in this case, editing the 44th GSA Field Guide Unfolding the Geology of the West. Matt Morgan, currently Senior Research Geologist and Deputy Director of the CGS, along with Stephen Keller, staff Geologist, were coeditors on this interesting volume.

From the Introduction:

The Geological Society of America returns to Denver, Colorado, for its 128th Annual Meeting, GSA 2016. Colorado’s rich geologic history is a fitting place for the gathering of geologists. The four “Great Surveys” of the late 1800s ventured west to explore and document the region’s unknown natural resources and collect valuable geologic information. Many of the field trips in this volume, aptly titled “Unfolding the Geology of the West,” will cover the same hallowed ground as the early geologic expeditions. This is something to ponder as you enjoy participating in this year’s field-trip lineup.

The volume is organized into four sections spanning some of the major subdisciplines of geology: Part 1 (Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Paleontology); Part 2 (Structure and Metamorphism); Part 3 (Quaternary Landscape Evolution); and Part 4 (Engineering and Environmental Geology). Within these four sections, a total of sixteen individual papers (and field trips) examine a wide range of geological situations across the region.
