Swelling soil is a clay soil that expands and contracts with changes in water content. Soils that contain smectite clay minerals are the most prone to swelling and shrinking. One type of swelling soil is montmorillonite. The extreme volume changes associated with swelling soils pose as a major challenge for civil and geological engineers. Most of Colorado is underlain by swelling soils.
