An evaporite is a mineral sediment that is soluble (or dissolvable) in water. The two classifications of evaporite minerals are marine and non-marine. Marine deposits form in ocean environments, while non-marine deposits form in lakes and other standing water bodies. Large areas of Colorado are underlain by Mesozoic and/or Paleozoic evaporite deposits.
