Gunnison National Forest

Lake City, Colorado – Point of Geological Interest G5

slumgullion earthflow

The Slumgullion Earthflow is a world-class example of a gigantic earthflow landslide, which has dammed the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River and created Lake San Cristobal, Colorado’s second-largest natural lake. Parts of the landslide are still active today. Interpretive signs for this Registered National Landmark have been placed at scenic pullouts along State Highway 149, which crosses the lower part of the slide.
