F.V. Hayden, 1870
Dr. Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden (September 7, 1829 – December 22, 1887) was an American geologist noted for his pioneering surveying expeditions of the Rocky Mountains in the late 1800’s. Heorganized and led geologic and geographic expeditions into the Rocky Mountains, both before and after the Civil War. In 1869, F. V. Hayden conducted the first of a series of expeditions to explore the geology of Colorado and Wyoming. He is well known for having conducted geologic mapping field work in 1873, ’74, ’75 and ’76, covering the entire State of Colorado and adjacent portions of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico.
