Enabling Legislation & Statutes

The State Legislature created the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) and, through time, statutorily mandated certain activities by CGS and the State Geologist. The State Legislature also defined the practice of Professional Geology in Colorado.

Effective January 31, 2013,CGS was transferred to the Colorado School of Mines through Colorado House Bill 12-1355 (Colorado Revised Statutes Title 23, Article 41, Part 2). This supersedes Colorado Revised Statutes 34-1-101 to 34-1-305 for the Colorado Geological Survey.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) was separated from CGS in 2013 under Colorado House Bill 13-1057.
